The power of satellite data to produce remarkably clear images of the world around us is growing. What was previously a government-only technology is now increasingly used for commercial and military purposes. Images taken from space are critical, from capturing the devastation left behind by a natural disaster to observing agricultural crops to scoping out a competing business' parking lot.
But these images also play a crucial role in national security, including spotting illegal fishing or smuggling to documenting people fleeing a region, which could be an early sign of a civil conflict. In addition, the availability of higher resolution satellite images has also called into question its ethical use.
